Happy 50th Birthday Clifford!

This is a very special year at Scholastic as our iconic mascot, Clifford, turns 50. Clifford is everywhere at Scholastic—there are pictures of him on the walls and at desks, and there is even a giant plush Clifford in the bookstore. We just wish that the friendly 25-foot-tall dog were real! Although it might present us with some space issues, having Clifford in the office with us would be so much fun.

The Big Red Dog has always been one of my favorite childhood book characters. I have been a dog lover for as long as I can remember, so growing up I loved reading about Clifford and Emily Elizabeth’s adventures. One of my favorite books was Clifford’s Good Deeds, in which Clifford helps rescue a cat from a tree simply by pushing the branch with his giant paw. As a child I always imagined Emily Elizabeth reaching out her bedroom window and petting Clifford’s nose. I couldn’t wait to get my own dog! Whenever I think of Clifford now I think of his friendly demeanor and his hilarious tendency to be a little clumsy because of his size.

Since Clifford was so important to me when I was younger, it is great to know that he still holds so much esteem in today’s literary culture. At Scholastic, Clifford’s 50th birthday has been heavily anticipated, with posters hanging around the walls and special celebrations planned. I can’t wait to see the adventures that Clifford has in store for us during his next 50 years!

To celebrate, we’ll be hosting a webcast for Clifford’s birthday on September 24! Teachers can sign up their classrooms now by clicking here.

This was my favorite book as a child. I loved it so much that I named my daughter Emily after the books main character.
