Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with the ever hilarious Junie B. Jones.
Junie B. is back in action in her latest book, Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff). Barbara Park and Denise Brunkus hit it out of the park with another book full of comical Junie B. wisdom, great illustrations, and of course, a funny new perspective on a favorite holiday.
Junie B.’s classroom has to come up with a thankful list for a school contest (which a first grade classroom has never won). Of course, there are hijinks with Tattletale May, Junie B.’s friends, and even their teacher, Mr. Scary.
To celebrate the release of a brand-new Junie B. story and Thanksgiving, we are hosting a giveaway! Ten lucky readers will win a copy of Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten. signed by Barbara Park. All you have to do to enter is tell us what you’re thankful for. The phrase “I’m thankful for” MUST be in your comment to enter. Click here for complete rules. You have until 11:59 p.m. EST on 11/18/12 to enter!

I am thankful that after 3 years of waiting, I have finally been hired on permanently to teach 1st grade at the school of my dreams!
I work as a literacy coach in an urban district. Today I met a 4th grade girl who had just transferred into our district. The teacher was attempting to assess her reading level yet she refused to cooperate and instead sat mute holding back tears. The teacher called me over exasperated on what to do. I took the girl out in the hall and asked her about her reading where she broke down sobbing. What I was able to get out of her was that her family situation had changed drastically and suddenly and she was forced to move in with her grandmother in our town. She cried that she hates reading bc she’s afraid people will make fun of her and that she does not own a single book at her grandmothers. I promptly brought her to my office and filled a book bag worth of my favorite children’s titles. I was dismayed that I did not have a spare Junie B. book on hand! (Especially bc it’s my daughters’ favorite!) After a pep talk she left my office smiling cradling her new bag of books. It was at that moment that I realized I am thankful for my children and their love of reading. My girls are so lucky to be surrounded at home by great books and parents who read to them but not every kid has that opportunity. I am also thankful for meeting that teary eyed little girl who was comforted during a difficult time in her life by a few simple books. I hope to share my love of reading with her!

I am thankful for the kindness of others…especially now in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. As a Long Islander, I have not only read about the devastion Sandy caused but I have seen it firsthand. The helping hands from our own communities to the men and women who came to restore our ‘power’ to the organizations and anonymous individuals that continue to provide what they can (and some themselves have very little)….these acts of kindness do more than get us back on our feet. They are opportunities for us to teach our children of the blessings they have and they are opportunities to guide our children to ‘pay it forward.’
