Exclusive Video: THE YEAR OF THE BOOK

We read A LOT of books around the office here at Scholastic Reading Club. And every once in a while we come across a book that you might not have heard about yet, but that we know will connect with readers in a really special way. So we’ve created a brand-new video series exploring these hidden gems and the ways they inspire imagination!

I’m really excited to present today’s video, featuring The Year of the Book by Andrea Cheng. This is a great story to share at the beginning of a new school year because it reminds us how crucial good books can be in a reader’s life. It also introduces so many ideas that I personally love—sharing the joy of reading, empowering kids to make things, and creating useful stuff from recycled materials.

Here’s a little bit about the book: Anna Wang is a Chinese American fourth grader who’s navigating some rocky territory. In addition to her elementary school, she attends Chinese school to please her mother, but she doesn’t feel like she really belongs in either place. Her best friend, Laura, only wants to be friends with Anna when popular Allison is too busy. So Anna retreats into her own world, a world of books and stories. But is her rich reading life keeping her from reaching out to other potential friends?

Anna is good at a lot of solitary things, including sewing, and it takes her a while to figure out how to use this skill to form friendships instead of letting it isolate her. Anna’s homemade lunch bag plays a key role in helping her make friends, which is why we wanted to demonstrate how to make a bag like hers. We hope our enthusiasm for The Year of the Book (and for making crafty projects) is infectious and that you’ll find great ways to share this video and the book with the kids in your life.
