My Mom Made Me Do That Too, Greg.

It all started when I began working here back in July. I had been doing freelance work with Scholastic for a couple of years and fell in love with the company. Once I started full-time, I wanted to get to know the books better. And that’s how I discovered (and pretty much became obsessed with) Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Now, I know these books are popular with kids, but let me just say: they are hilarious. If you yourself have not yet read the series I implore you to go out and read it now! (The eighth book in the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, comes out on November 5—WOOHOO!)

I laugh so hard from these books that I’m actually embarrassed to read them in public (but I still do anyway). I laugh so hard from these books that I snort. I laugh so hard that, two weekends ago, at the beach, I was reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel and I actually started crying. TEARS. Like, coming out of my face. My friends looked at me and said “Who laughs out loud from a book?!”

Exactly. Who laughs out loud from a book?

But that’s just how funny these books are. What makes them so hilarious is that everything that happens to this Greg Heffley character rings eerily true. Everything is something straight out of middle school. All the weird kids he meets—I sat next to them in homeroom. That smelly kid? Senior prom date. And every awkward, uncomfortable thing his mom makes him do—my mom made me do that too.

My mom made me pose with the guy who played Conan the Barbarian on our trip to Universal Studios back when I was nine; she said my friends would be “jealous” that I got to be in a picture with such a “hunky monkey.” But all I could think about was how I wish he was wearing a longer loincloth.

Because these books hit home so much, they’ve inspired me to actually read my own old diaries—and then share them with you. Right here on this blog. You’re welcome, world.

Here’s a snippet of something I wrote in seventh grade:

Like Greg, you can see I had everything figured out, even in middle school.

Now, why don’t you do the same? Read your own old diaries. Flip through an old photo album or your middle school yearbook. I promise you, it’s fun—and will make you appreciate the Wimpy Kid series even more.

Then, share your stories with us here! What did you do that was particularly “wimpy” or hilarious? Who did your mom make you pose in a picture with? What was the name of your older brother’s band? We can’t wait to hear from you!

There is indeed, Layla! The 8th book, HARD LUCK, comes out on November 5th! I’ve already pre-ordered my copy :) What’s your favorite part about the series?

  3. Layla, Deborah, I’ve got something shocking to tell you:
“I have a crush on Greg Heffley.”

If I told Greg that same secret that I told you guys, what would he say?

Layla, Deborah, or both may answer.
