Wimpy Wonderings, Part 2: Questions for Jeff Kinney

Last week we put together some questions we’d like Greg Heffley to answer. But what would you ask the man behind the wimp—Mr. Jeff Kinney?

Well, here’s some exciting news: you might be able to ask him your questions IN PERSON! Pre-order the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid by October 21, 2013, and you will be automatically entered for a chance to win a classroom visit from Jeff Kinney!

If WE got the chance, here’s what the folks at Scholastic Reading Club would ask Jeff Kinney:

Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, how do you get around it?
—Katie, Manager, Online Merchandising

Are the characters in Diary of a Wimpy Kid based on your own family/friends growing up? Or your family now?
—Carmela, Vice President of Merchandising

Beatboxing? Tap dancing? Competitive eating? Tell us your hidden talent!!!
—Deborah, Merchandising Manager for Grades 1–3

When you were growing up, did you keep a diary? If so, have you drawn any inspiration from that for the Wimpy Kid books?
—Heather S., Assistant Director, Merchandising and Social Media

Is the Wimpy Kid font/Greg’s handwriting styled after your own handwriting?
—Nicole, Merchandising Coordinator for Grades 4–5 and Middle School

Greg Heffley’s unmistakable hand... or is it Jeff Kinney’s handwriting???? Diary of a Wimpy Kid, page 8.

Name your Kryptonite: laundry, gardening, taking out the trash. In other words, what do you HATE doing?
—Emma, Merchandising Coordinator for Preschool and Kindergarten

How many drafts of each Wimpy Kid book do you typically go through?
—Jen, Assistant Marketing Director

Greg seems to be kiiiiiiiiiind of a germaphobe. Do you have any irrational fears?
—Heather N., Assistant Director, Online Merchandising

Greg Heffley is afraid of Ruby Bird (along with so so many other things). But what scares Jeff Kinney? Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel, page 60.

How do you come up with the characters’ names? (One of my favorites is the Snella family).
—Dana, Assistant Creative Services Director for Teacher Pages

Bio about Author: Deborah works on the Promotions team as the Merchandising Manager for grades one, two, and three. She’s a huge fan of the Wimpy Kid series. Her favorite character has to be Greg (duh). And of course Uncle Gary.
