It’s Visit the Zoo Day!

When I was looking over the December calendar, I saw all the holidays I expected to: Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve. But buried on December 27 was Visit the Zoo Day, a holiday I didn’t remember seeing any other year.

I started thinking about zoos in winter and what a different experience they are. Last December I visited a zoo to see North American animals that are accustomed to the cold weather (including arctic foxes, porcupines, and caribou) in their outdoor habitats. I remember other winters where I shed layers of coats and scarves to wander indoor reptile houses, aviaries, and even butterfly gardens.

I’m not sure if I’ll bundle up to visit a zoo this Visit the Zoo Day, but I might just curl up with a pile of zoo- and animal-themed books! This list feels like a pretty good start:
