How to Be Popular

Every new school year brings new challenges. Meeting new classmates, new teachers, and adjusting to increasingly difficult classes can be scary and overwhelming.

The best advice for students might come from another student! For some great advice on starting the new school year as smoothly as possible, check out the video below featuring  Maya Van Wagenen, the teenage author of Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek.

Scholastic Book Clubs Online Video Player.

When she was in 8th grade, Maya challenged herself to follow a popularity guide written in the 1950s. Following the guide required her to adhere to some pretty outdated advice, including wearing pearls, skirts, and red lipstick to school every day. But by spending a year following the guide and chasing after popularity, Maya became a friendlier, happier person and gained a deeper understanding of what it really means to be “popular.” In her words, “Real popularity is kindness and acceptance. It is about who you are and how you treat others.”

For more guidance from Maya, be sure to check out her book Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek. Let us know what you think about Maya’s advice in the comments below! Do you have any advice about starting school or “popularity” that you would like to share?
