In Honor of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is observed each year on November 11 to honor the men and women who have served their country in the military. At Scholastic Reading Club, we’re observing the day with some books that remember the sacrifices of veterans and their families.

Understanding the realities faced by soldiers in times of peace and war through books like these helps us to observe Veterans Day with an even deeper appreciation for their courage and sacrifice.

In The Veterans Day Visitor, Pop-Pop comes to school to talk about Veterans Day and the heroes that it honors.

Allan Zullo’s Ten True Tales books are based on real-life events. These collected accounts of military service are a fitting salute to every member of the armed services.

Mike’s father was killed in Afghanistan eight years ago. So when Mike starts receiving letters from him, he’s not exactly sure what he’s supposed to do about it. If You’re Reading This is a moving look at  a son learning to reconnect with the father he lost to war.

In Laurie Halse Anderson’s The Impossible Knife of Memory, unforgettable characters help each other heal as a father and daughter deal with the devastating after-effects of war.

“This is challenging material, but in Anderson’s skilled hands, readers will find a light shining on the shadowy reality of living with someone who has lived through war—and who is still at war with himself.” —Booklist (starred review)

Please join Scholastic Reading Club in honoring our veterans. We also suggest taking a moment to remember the greater freedom our veterans have fought to ensure. The men and women of the United States armed forces risk their lives to protect our country each and every day. We’d like to express our respect and gratitude for their service.
