14 Things We Loved in 2014

It’s the start of a new year and like everyone else, we’re remembering the highlights of all that happened over the past 12 months. In addition to great music and movies and political events, there was a lot of love for books this year. Here are 14 book-related moments, events, and things that we loved in 2014.

1. The heartwarming story of Michigan teacher Rachel Kyncl and her Scholastic Santa.

2. This year’s Caldecott and Newbery acceptance speeches were wonderful. You can watch Brian Floca’s speech here and Kate DiCamillo’s here.

3. Kate DiCamillo was named the fourth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and has been sharing the message that “Stories connect us.”

4. J.K. Rowling released new Harry Potter short stories!

5. Movies, movies, movies! There were great movies based on some of our favorite books this year including: Divergent, Mockingjay, If I Stay, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Unbroken, The Giver, The Fault in Our Stars, Vampire Academy, Maze Runner, Boxtrolls (based on Here Be Monsters!), and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

6. We were inspired by the We Need Diverse Books campaign and by a colleague’s reminder of why it’s so important.

7. Announcements of great new books to come in 2015! We can’t wait for the newest books by Brian Selznick, Ally Carter, Gayle Forman, Marissa Meyer, Holly Black, Andrew Smith, and Shannon Hale.

8. This was a year for amazing webcasts with some of our favorite entertainers. Jeff Kinney & Dav Pilkey teamed up for a story smashup, while Usher and Taylor Swift helped spread the word about Open a World of Possible.

9. The release of a new Wimpy Kid book is always cause for celebration. Book nine, The Long Haul had us laughing all the way through the Heffley family road trip!

10. The sneak peek of the Fifth Edition of the Kids & Family Reading Report.

11. When we were able to capture the moment that Sharon Robinson and Ruby Bridges met for the first time at the IRA Conference in New Orleans.

12. We may have created the list of #100ReasonstoRead, but it stuck with us all year long! Every day there seems to be a new reason to read and this list is a great reminder of why reading tops our list of favorite things!

13. When actor and comedian Bill Hader told The New York Times about ordering books from Scholastic and reading BUNNICULA!

14. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Black Lagoon books. We’re still glad Hubie’s around to help us work through our own anxieties!

Do you have a favorite book-related moment from this year? We’d love to hear about it. Share it in the comments below!
