#LoveTeachers: David Shannon

We weren’t too surprised to hear that David Shannon’s memories of his favorite teacher included some details about his troublemaking past. He has already acknowledged that the inspiration for No, David!  came from a book he wrote and illustrated as a child. “No, David!” were the only words he could write and the illustrations were of a boy causing trouble.

When we asked David about his favorite teacher, he shared this incredible illustration and story with us.

“No, my favorite teacher didn’t really give us doughnuts. In fact, sometimes I didn’t think she was nice at all. One time she tied my hair up with a red ribbon and a pretty little bow because she thought my hair was too long! But she was fair when I was bad, and she noticed when I was good. And she read lots of great stories to us, like Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling. I ran into her once, many years after I was in her class, and not only did she remember me, she remembered all my friends, too. And she didn’t care that my hair was still too long.”
