We Love Libraries!

Libraries have always played a big part in my life—I grew up going to story hours, volunteering to shelve books, and taking home piles of Marguerite Henry books. Of course, the most important library-inspired element of my life is someone very important to me: my mom! My mother has been a librarian for the past 16 years, and she’s definitely influenced my love of these special spaces. Here are some of her thoughts on what libraries mean to her:

What’s your favorite part about being a librarian?

My favorite part of being a librarian is finding the perfect book for a reader who’s really struggling to find something that’s right for them. Sometimes a library can be an overwhelming place, especially for a young reader, but when I find the right match I feel like a book fairy granting a patron’s wish! A close second is giving library cards to children who’ve just learned to write their names; they’re always so proud to have their own card that it reminds me what a privilege it is to borrow books.

What’s your best memory of working at a library?

The best day I’ve ever had working at a library is when we opened our new learning commons, full of state-of-the-art technology for the public to use [Interviewer’s note: there’s a 3-D printer! It’s so COOL]. It reminds us that libraries aren’t just rows of books on shelves; they’re public access points to information and adventure! Our resource space hosts programs, from authors-in-residence to jewelry-making groups, and it really reinforces that libraries can be thriving community centers.

What’s your favorite story-time book?

There are a lot of books that I love reading to our youngest patrons, but my most recent favorite is The Farmer’s Away! Baa! Neigh! I love making everyone laugh with all the silly animal noises.
